Abstract:
The depletion of energy resources and primary raw materials leads to the search for alternative pathways to produce construction materials. In the development of new synthetic construction materials, the utilization of by-products from various industrial sectors increasingly becomes a necessity, especially in resource-poor countries. The lecture covers the following topics: environmental issues stemming from the disposal of substantial quantities of solid by-products, concerns regarding chemical contaminants, NORM (naturally occurring radioactive materials), major types of industrial by-products (silica fume, coal fly ash, blast-furnace slag, red mud, phosphogypsum) and their characterization, regulations governing their use, challenges in reuse and recycling of industrial by-products in construction. The lecture is supplemented by a straightforward laboratory test demonstrating the presence of contaminants in industrial by-products.
About the Speaker:
Prof. Kovler, PhD, is a structural engineer who has been shaping the field since joining the Technion in 1991. Specializing in advanced building materials and concrete durability, his research is widely published, with over 100 peer-reviewed papers and contributions to more than 30 books and book chapters. He plays a key role in industry as a consultant for major engineering projects, including the Sarona Tower in Tel Aviv and marine structures for the Israeli Port Authority. He is also the chair of three expert committees (“Non-destructive and Special Tests of Concrete”, “Radioactivity of Building Materials” and “Lightweight Aggregates”) and three technical committees (“Concrete Materials and Products”, “Steel for the Reinforcement of Concrete” and “Ecological Aspects of Construction”) in the Israeli Institute of Standards. Prof. Kovler’s work not only advances academic knowledge but also directly impacts the construction industry, making him a vital resource for engineers seeking to innovate in sustainable and high-performance construction materials.
